Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head 'Life & Limb' Tapping Party @ Jake's Omaha!

The voices were heard, and it is time for Jake's Omaha to get on board with the Friday tapping parties. From today, and going forward, Jake's Omaha will feature a new rare/special/seasonal beer on draft every Friday strating at 5pm. Today (8/19) Jake's Omaha will be unleashing a very special collaboration beer from Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head called 'Life & Limb'. A delicious strong ale bursting with caramel and mollases notes, as well as hints of cinamon spice.

From Dogfish Head's website, "Life & Limb is a collaborative effort, the brainchild of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong, dark beer that defies style characteristics- brewed with pure maple syrup from the Calagione family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown on the Grossman "farm" at the brewery in Chico, CA. The beer is alive with yeast-a blend of both breweries' house strains-bottle conditioned for added complexity and shelf life, and naturally carbonated with birch syrup fresh from Alaska.

Life & Limb is dedicated to the family of beer drinkers and enthusiasts worldwide who continue to support the little guys, iconoclasts, entrepreneurs, and pioneers who risk life and limb to shape the vibrant craft-brewing community."

Jake's Omaha is located on 62nd & Maple in Benson. Along with tonights featured tapping, Jake's Omaha offers a huge selection of bottled craft beer, 24 handles (4 nitro), a permanent beer engine, and the beer bar area is completely smoke-free! If you have never been down, you gotta check it out.

Crafting a Favorful Beer Brat

From their press release

(Lincoln, NE) – Just in time for tailgate season, Super Saver presents smokehouse-fresh Burning Skye Beer Brats. The collaboration between Empyrean Brewing Co. and Super Saver, two locally owned companies, is the brainchild of Tom Joyce, assistant store director at Super Saver on South 27th and Pine Lake Road. His idea: hand-crafted brats made with hand-crafted beer.

The experts took it from there. As the smokehouse manager for Super Saver, Bob Voss knows sausage. He’s won numerous awards for his creations. Voss teamed up with Jim Engelbart, production manager at Empyrean Brewing Co. Together, they decided Burning Skye Scottish Style beer would make the perfect tailgate brat.

To kick off the new product, they are holding a free sampling on Friday, August 19th from 3-6 p.m. at the South 27th and Pine Lake Super Saver location in Lincoln.

“The sweet, bready-malt flavors and light, smoky finish of Burning Skye are an ideal complement to the flavors of grilled brats with all their trimmings,” Engelbart explained. “Burning Skye Beer Brats will definitely have you asking for seconds.”

Made fresh at each location’s smokehouse, Burning Skye Beer Brats are now available in all Super Saver locations in Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, Columbus and Council Bluffs.

“These beer brats are great with any of your favorite BBQ or tailgate sides,” said Voss. Which is good news as the Burning Skye Beer Brats will be stocked by Super Saver through the end of football season.

“It’s exciting when local companies combine their shared strengths in quality and flavor to create a delicious result,” said Voss.

Super Saver stores are owned and operated by B&R Stores, Inc., an employee-owned retail grocery company based in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Empyrean Brewing Co. is the largest and oldest brewery in the state of Nebraska and operates from the Haymarket in Lincoln, Nebraska. Empyrean Brewing Co. distributes in Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Lauter Tun - New craft beer bar in Omaha

The other day I was cruising through Facebook and noticed what appeared to be a new craft beer bar opening up in Omaha.  Few details were provided so I asked the guys if they could give us some details on what to expect and when it will open.  All I can say is Omaha is pretty lucky to have this place and I can't wait to visit it when it opens.  Sounds very interesting and exciting.

Here is what Chad had to say about the project.

The Lauter Tun - Fine Ales and Spirits - plans to offer a large selection of craft and import beers on tap and in bottle as well as craft spirits from around the country.  While the beers that are currently mass marketed and widely available at most venues are good, we plan on providing as many rare and interesting beers as we possibly can.

One of my biggest turn-offs about a bar (specifically a specialty bar), is when the staff, and even management, is not trained on, nor are the interested in, the products they are selling.  This is too often the case.  If I go to a vodka bar, I expect the staff to know at least a little bit about the process and the various types of vodka.  Same goes for beer bars.

...our staff will be extremely well versed in beer and spirits as I pride myself on being fairly knowledgeable and, more importantly, non-intimidating and excited about the products.

Along with an exciting beer list, I am very much interested in high end spirits and old school cocktails.  We plan to create a classic cocktail list, using only fresh ingredients and well crafted spirits.  Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Negroni, Collins, Rickey, you name it.

Two things I am also excited about is the stage and the technology.
Being a musician myself (as are most of the others involved in this project), I typically play at bars where a stage is off to the side or in the back somewhere.  This makes it difficult for patrons to see/hear the music.  They have to turn around in their seats, or rubber-neck it to see what is going on.  Our bar butts up against / is built INTO the stage.  The idea being, no matter where the guest is sitting, they should be able to see the performers.  No lights hanging in your way, no big coolers obstructing your view.

Secondly, we are trying to incorporate a little technology in the website and the menus.  We are attempting to create a sort of beer matrix which will categorize beers by brewery, style, ABV, bottle/tap, SRM, IBU, etc.  The goal being that when a guest checks out the website on their phone or at home, they can pick a style and, bam, all the beers we offer of that style pop up along with a picture and brief description/review.  ALSO, our servers will be carrying around iPads with this exact thing on it allowing them to point out key beers AND cocktails.

The overall vibe we are going for is nice and comfortable.  We want to include all walks of life.  If you like beer, good drinks, music, or all of the above, then this will need to be your most frequented bar!

Opening date set tentatively for late October, early November.  So when you are shopping at the mall last minute for holiday gifts, come by and grab a pint!

Thank you for your time and we cant wait to see you there.

Well, I don't know about you but I am excited to check this place out when it opens.  Cheers to a couple guys following their dream and passions!

Here is a great article on how a visit from Lee Terry to Lucky Bucket convinced him on the spot to get behind the Small Brewers Bill in congress right now.

Nice job Zac!  Craft brewers everywhere and craft drinkers everywhere thank you for going that extra mile with your representative.
