A good article about biking and beer. I myself enjoy taking a ride to a local craft beer tap house. I might have to check into that Greenstreet Cycles ride to Jake's.

While I'm sure all of the drink-and-riders will say "only in moderation," this article had "BAD IDEA" written all over it. I'm not saying I've never had a beer and ridden home, but to highlight drinking and riding is going to give a bad image of bike riders to the general public. Also, it could make it seem more acceptable for bike riders to imbibe more than they should.
I agree, partly. Especially as it pertains to the "Taco Ride" mentioned in the article. I have never been on this ride, but I heard many stories. It seems to me, there are many novice riders and irresponsible drinkers. A recipe for disaster.
However, in regards to our fellow craft beer drinkers, the vast majority are responsible imbibers. For these types of rides, I believe the riders are cautious and respectful of their intake. I personally treat riding my bicycle the same as I would if I were operating a motor vehicle.
Kevin, I don't understand your premise that a story about people who ride a bike and consume alcohol responsibly will give the general public a bad image. If that is truly the case then do you believe this blog and any other outlet that promotes the consumption of alcohol should be banned since we will only harm the reputations of others?
I enjoy the Taco Ride. I see it very similar to going to a bar. At a bar there are people who are looking to over consume and get crazy. There are also some people that came to hang out with friends and not drink at all. Then there is the majority of population that are somewhere in between. If you don't judge a bar by its craziest patron you should also not judge the Taco Ride by its craziest. That being said, ALWAYS wear a helmet on the Taco Ride. No matter how much you trust yourself you can't trust everyone else. This also goes for wearing your seat belt in a vehicle.
Nick I agree with you partly. Irresponsible drinkers are a recipe for disaster. I don't think anything else matters.
I ran the Lincoln 1/2 Marathon twice and was amazed at how many "drinking club with a running problem" shirts i saw. Drinking really is a popular activity.
Good points, Tom. I'm liking that I'm getting all this feedback on a post.
I do have to clarify my Taco Ride comments. Since I haven't been on this, I can't really speak for it. Just going off of stories that been told to me.
Like Tom said, irresponsible drinkers are everywhere. They give everyone a bad name.
Just my own beer/bike of choice, not debating "good/bad" paradigm. From Bellevue, it is 8 miles one way to Upstream (downtown Omaha). A beer and the pot-roast dinner. Roads are mostly back roads with a 1-mile exception...I do this trip usually early to mid-afternoon and traffic is not bad at this time. // The other choice is 9 miles one way to Nebraska Brewing Company via bike paths...some Google maps work was necessary to keep the route off of 72nd street, although one /might/ try riding on the media for a short distance. Again, beer and dinner, bike ride is 45 mins with little traffic, and unless I'm just sore from lack of riding, I'll avoid any cars I see anyway. Wind is an issue in the relatively open areas sometimes. // Dave K, Beer snob in Bellevue
