10th Annual Winterfest

I just saw on Empyrean's facebook page that the 10th Annual Winterfest in Lincoln is coming up fast.  Here are the details.

AAF Lincoln finds the best way to stay warm in January is to huddle up for Winterfest Ales & Auction. It’s our 10th annual fundraiser to benefit our public service recipient, the ARC of Lincoln and our student scholarship fund.

This has become the winter social event where you can have fun with friends and benefit a terrific cause. You will have the opportunity to sample beer from local and regional brewers and distributors... ...that's what it's all about, right?

Your ticket will also include food sampling from Buzzard Billy’s, Embassy Suites, and Sam & Louie’s Pizza plus Levi William is coming back to give us the blues as they were intended to be played. Brews and blues = big time bonus fun!

If you are an AAF Lincoln member, you can purchase tickets for only $20.00 (up to 2) through www.aaflincoln.org and for the general public:

Winterfest VIP is returning for this 2011 event. AAF Lincoln is opening the doors early for a VIP opportunity to sample the fine brews and foods of the event for 30 non-interrupted minutes before the masses arrive. It's like having brewers come to your own living room ... if your living room happens to be the size of a ballroom.

FestivAle – our winter seasonal, bright-copper color with hints of caramel sweetness, smoke, and dry herbal spices.

Beer Quest 2009 Export Stout – big and roasted with coffee, plum and port character.

Dark Side Vanilla Porter – a unique infusion of smooth-roasted porter and sweet-aromatic vanilla bean.

LunaSea ESB – our homage to the great amber “bitters” of England, full-flavored and smile inducing.

Better World Wheat – bright, citrusy, and smooth with a refreshing, dry herbal finish.

Burning Skye Scottish Ale - pale, sweet, and smooth with a wee bit of smoke character.

We have not been contacted by any one so I am not aware of who else will be serving but if you are serving or know someone that is let me know and we will get it posted.  You can RSVP to the event here.

Nebraska Brewing's Barrel Aged 'Hop God' Tapping Party @ Derailleur Tpa Room

Friday is a very special treat. Our amazing friends at Nebraska Brewing Company have blessed us with a keg of their barrel aged version of 'Hop God'. For the past year this beer has been intensely sought after from coast to coast, and absolutely deserves the the accolades it has received. It takes on an entirely different character from it's regular (and also delicious) draft version due to it's lengthy conditioning time in barrels. As this has only been available in 750ml bottles, we could not be more excited that they filled us up a whole (5 gallon) keg!

From the brewers website "Chardonnay Barrel aged version. 750ml bottle only. Contained within this bottle is an artful creation which began with our Hop God Belgian-Style IPA, then enhanced by a 6 month maturation in French Oak Chardonnay Barrels. This version of Hop God is a fascinating, big, bold Belgian-style Tripel hopped in very high amounts to concentrate citrus, grapefruit and floral aromatics in the nose. The addition of Chardonnay barrel aging adds further dimension and oak tannins to an already wonderfully complex Ale - bringing to mind tropical fruits and peach. We know of nothing that compares - enjoy!"

Nebraska Craft Beer article in Nebraska Life

My parents brought in their Nebraska Life magazine today to show me that there was an article on breweries and craft beer.  I am somewhat skeptical when non-beer geeks bring me items to look at because, not to be snobish, I have probably seen it or heard it already.  It should stop being surprising to me that I don't hear and see everything in the beer world but it is true.  :-)

So, instead of working first thing this morning I read the article written by Matthew Spencer in the magazine, here is a web only excerpt.  It manages to hit on most of the breweries in the state, interviewing most of the brewers.  It has a great run down of the brewing history in Omaha, even with a nod to the fact that Fred Astaire worked at one of the breweries when he was younger.

It is a very good article and a good show piece for Nebraskans.  Nebraska Life is a wonderful magazine and something I enjoy reading and opens my mind up to what is out there in our great state.  This will open those breweries up to new audiences that love to travel based on what they find in this magazine.

Thanks Matthew for writing the article!

Upstream Release Party (Malk Sweet Stout)

From their email...

Upstream's Malk Sweet Stout is the perfect way to welcome the New Year.  British brewers began adding unfermentable milk sugar to stout around the time of World War II to add body and sweetness to this traditional beer; it was also often advertised as a healthy beer for nursing mothers.  Upstream's brewers are happy to bring you a sweet stout that perfectly balances the roasted notes of the dark malts with the sweetness of the milk sugar to deliver a beer with a hint of rich dark chocolate.  Resolve to start the year with a pint of Upstream's Malk Sweet Stout, Drink UP!

5.5% ABV, 30 IBU, 1.067 O.G.

> Come to the first floor bar area
> Upstream’s brewers will be present to answer questions and talk about beer
> Ask your bartender or server for a ticket good for a complimentary pint of our newly released beer
