This October 23, 2010 (3pm - 8pm) Bricktop Tap House will open early for a special event featuring all five of Mikkeller's Yeast Series Ales on draft. Mikkeller is a small brewery from Copenhagen Denmark known for producing extremely interesting and exquisite small batch craft beers.
Besides provenance, these beers are notable because all five are produced by the same process and recipe except for one difference: each is fermented with a different yeast strain. The base beer is an 8 % pale brew with moderate hoppiness, and all five beers employ the exact same water, hops, and malt. The major flavor differential is the yeast's fermentation effects on aroma and taste.
Bricktop will feature all five beers in 4 oz. tasting sizes. Mikkeller has produced a video for this event that will be shown throughout the evening. Bricktop will also be recording video during the event to be included on the official Mikkeller company website.
Each yeast strain has taken the base beer in a completely different direction. This is a unique opportunity to develop a first hand experience with the effect of yeast on the brewing process. This is also a limited time opportunity to sample the very rare and world renowned beers of the Mikkeller brewery. Once the beer is gone, it’s gone.
The Beers:
MIKKELLER YEAST SERIES: BELGIAN ALE : The standard yeast behind the intense fruit and spice aromas of Belgian Ales.
MIKKELLER YEAST SERIES: BRETTANOMYCES: The classic semi-wild yeast of the Payottenland, a place where it imparts the funky flavors and mild acidity to Lambics.
MIKKELLER YEAST SERIES: HEFEWEIZEN: Bavaria's most suggestive yeast! The strain known for imparting banana, clove and bubblegum to Hefeweizen.
MIKKELLER YEAST SERIES: LAGER: A yeast seldom seen until about 500 years ago, this strain has become the world's most popular by virtue of its mellower aromatic contributions and its tendency to produce cleaner, crisper flavors.
MIKKELLER YEAST SERIES: US ALE: Though an ale yeast, this strain is known for being more neutral when it comes to fermentation flavors, often allowing the intense flavors of American hops to shine through.
Bricktop is located in Lincoln at 1427 O Street.
