Nebraskadian Black Ale on tap at Nebraska Brewing Company

Ok, so a confession, I find the the Black IPA, Cascadian Dark ale business to a be a bit ridiculous.  I have tried a few of these supposed beers and most of them left me wanting more.  I think the biggest turn off for me is just the naming of them and fight over what the name should be called.  It all seems so trivial and the more I get into beer the less of a style nazi I become.  I want a beer that taste good/great, I could give two craps whether it fits a style perfectly or not.  So when I saw this note today on facebook, I loved it!!  Nebraska Brewing Company seems to be mocking the controversy and at the same time playing up on the "gimick."  That, my friends, makes it clever.  Here is what they have to say about the beer and how you can get it.

There has been much talk and controversy lately over a fairly newly adopted style of beer featuring the blackness of a stout and the hop character of an IPA.  We're bucking both the naming trends of "Cascadian Dark Ale" and "India Black Ale" and calling our newest Brewer's Choice beer "Nebraskadian Black Ale".  Perfect for the dead of winter, this beer was made with a unique, seasonally offered malt called Black Prinz which gives the beer plenty of darkness in color but with a very restrained roastiness.  We also threw in a generous helping of Simcoe hops that we've been carefully hoarding for just the right beer.  The result is wonderfully piny and slightly floral to the nose, sweet and fruity at first on the palate and then a bit drier, with hints of chocolate and a finish that balances again towards the hops.

9.0% ABV
88 IBU
This style always sounds like it will be something I would love.  I won't get to try this one but I encourage you to head to the bar and get you some, if for no other reason than the name.  I almost wish they would make a shirt or a tap handle off this, I could see some pretty cool stuff in my head.  Might I also had, this looks like a monster at 9%, WOW!

Anyway, go out and enjoy!

Nate,

So glad you got the joke! I've been throwing name ideas around for this one for a while now and I really thought this captured my frustration over the "naming" of the style. I personally just want the beer to taste good and don't really care who gets to claim "ownership" of the style. Btw, my runner up name was "Bandwagon Black".

Oh, and I forgot, my working name for the beer while it was in the brewhouse was "Imperial Black Cascadian India Dark Ale" but somehow that just didn't roll off the tongue quite right. Wouldn't been hard to order after consuming one or two...
