New Belgium's fall seasonal, Hoptober, is now available at °Brix. Here's what they had to say about the beer on their facebook wall:
Happy Hoptober! New Belgium's fall seasonal is back and lives up to its B+ on Beeradvocate. We tried some just the other day and liked it! Five hop varieties contribute to 40 IBU of citrus and floral notes, and there is just enough malt sweetness to balance it out. A very good beer at a great price!I must agree. I think Hoptober is a fantastic fall beer from a great brewery. Drinkable and approachable enough for newer craft beer drinkers, yet still complex and interesting enough for veterans.

This is news? What grocery store doesn't have Hoptober? I can get it at Bag N Save. I can get it at Kum and Go. Is Brix paying to have this posted?
Look, we are communicating what we know to everyone. No, they have not paid anything. We are trying communicate more then we have in the past and this is an example of that. There will be things that arent news to everyone everytime. Deal with it!
If there is another outlet out there for you to stay connected, by all means see you later. We see our job as keeping everyone informed and growing craft beer in Nebraska.
I do see your point, and I did actually think twice about posting about Hoptober at Brix, but as Nate said, we are trying to communicate everything we can about beer in Nebraska. Besides, if we were getting paid by Brix to post this stuff, I'd have a sweet new temp controlled conical fermenter in my garage. ;)
BTW, we are open to constructive criticis to be sure, but if ytou want to be taken more seriously, please don't hide behind the anonymity offered by the internet. Leave your name.
Lucky Bucket available at Cost Co
Sam Adams Oktoberfest avaiable at Wal Mart
Nate, Travis... you really can't believe posting that ANY store has the New Belgium fall seasonal is newsworthy. I am all for annoucing when seasonal beers start to show-up in Omaha and Lincoln (the two cities in Nebraska that get 99% of the coverage in Nebraska Beer Blog... as it should) but Hoptober has been in stores for a month now. It just seemed odd.
As for not using my name, I am not some random internet bully. I am in the industry. I sell beer for a living and I am choosing not to leave my name to stay professional.
I would agree that this wasn't breaking news, and I don't believe I claimed it was. But Brix posted up on their Facebook wall that Hoptober was now available there and so I put it on the blog too. Was Brix and I a month late? I don't know, and I'm not sure that it matters. Like Nate and I both said, we're trying to communicate everything we can. You are certainly free to disagree with that philosophy.
I am getting pretty tired of industry people telling us how to do a job that is a service to craft beer lovers.
Just because you knew it was out there doesn't mean everyone knew.
Sorry for promoting products that you try to sell. I would hate to help sell more craft beer in the state. Why in the world would we want that to happen...
Would I admit this wasn't the tops of top news, yes. Do I still think it is a service worth providing, yep. What does it hurt??
I have nearly 900 friends on my personal facebook page that get the post on their feed. Of that 900, only about 200 are craft beer fans, so a post about a beer they may have never heard of just made it to their page and the next time they are in a grocery store and see this beer they might pick it up because "Nate" mentioned it the other day.
I hope that helps explain what we are doing.
This isn't your personal Facebook page. I and almost everyone else that views this blog for events or new information. No random person goes to a beer blog unless they like craft beer. Please post newsworthy information.
Ok, you betcha. Send me your email address and I'll make sure to run everything by you to make sure it's newsworthy.
Our mission, although not written down, is to promote and grow craft beer in Nebraska. So yes, my personal facebook page is relevant. So is twitter. So is the pub on the corner.
Excuse us for helping grow craft beer in the state by opening eyes of the soon to be converted, the newly converted or the die hard.
We are not solely for the beer geek, sorry, hate to burst your bubble.
We will continue to post items that aren't news to everyone and we will continue to post items that are news to everyone. We see a higher purpose in what we do and why we do it.
So please remove your beer geek blinders or go find another source of centralized Nebraska beer news, oh, that's right, we are it.
BTW, I agree with you, sometimes we post stuff that isn't news to me or something I would go to or care to know about but do you know what I do and most people do, we realize the world doesn't revolve around us, there are other people out there and maybe the next post will be relevant to me. You should try that sometime.
